This project originated from the vision of Admiral RK Dhowan, Chief of the Naval Staff, who felt that the thousands of years old maritime heritage of India, which had been covered under different publications and studies earlier, needed to be showcased in one book so that followers of this subject could get a collective glimpse of this rich and vast maritime culture. The Chief of the Naval Staff tasked the Indian Naval Academy to undertake the project in early 2015. The photo essay book 'Maritime Heritage of India' is a result of of that vision of the CNS and is a product of study of over two hundred books, publications, articles, papers, etc., written by subject matter experts, both, Indian and nonIndians. Discussions and interactions with prominent historians and institutions of India over the year 2015 provided additional material for the book.
The book is not an original piece of historical research nor a book on ‘history’, not even an original research, it is compilation and study of all that, and more its also a consequence of the perception of the editorial team of all matters that constitute ‘heritage’ of India and having been identified as having some link with the Indian Ocean. This photoessay book is a modest attempt to put forth India's extensive maritime linkages with the ocean in the past, to the consequences seen in the present and to underline the critical necessity of enhanced maritime outlook for the future of the country. It is increasingly clear that sustenance of the country’s economic growth is directly dependent on, and closely intertwined to, an environment of unhindered freedom of navigation in the global common.
The Indian Navy intends to lead the change in the orientation of India and her people, from the landward focus of the past century to a distinct and unwavering maritime outlook, to provide the impetus that the maritime outlook would drive engine of growth and prosperity of the resurgent nation. Hence, this small attempt by the Indian Navy to generate public interest, specifically young India's interest, in India’s rich, diverse and significant maritime heritage.
